Seniors need at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each day. No matter what your age, weight or health problems, some activity is better than none at all. Choose activities suitable for your physical ability and remember to see your doctor first if you haven't been active in a while.
Try a combination of some of these activities (for at least ten minutes continuously):
- Do some gentle stretches while watching television.
- Walk to the shop instead of driving.
- Enjoy the garden with activities such as regular pruning and weeding.
- Make house-cleaning an activity.
- Shop for food at the markets, where you will walk more than at the supermarket.
- Team up with a friend so you have an exercise buddy to keep motivated.
- Take up a hobby such as dancing.
- Join a local bowls club or walking group.
- Try gentle or lower weight-bearing activities such as walking, swimming or Tai Chi.
- Check the notice board at your local library or community centre to see what activities are available and easy to access.
- Buy a pedometer, or see if you can loan one from your library to count your steps, and try to gradually increase the number of your steps each day.
- Spend time playing outdoors with your grandchildren or pets.
