Commitments with Kids Tips

  • If you find yourself sitting on the sidelines watching your kids play sport a few times each week, why do you get up and get involved? Becoming a volunteer ref or sideline judge is a great way to support your kids and get active in a fun way all while giving something back to your community. Talk to your kids’ sports clubs to find out how you can get involved.

  • Walk and cycle to and from school or sporting commitments with your kids as often as possible.

  • Ride the bus to school with your kids and walk home.

  • Vary the route that when walking or riding with the kids to school or to their sports club.

  • Meet a group of mothers at drop-off time and do a walk around the school or club neighbourhood. Don’t forget to submit your steps to the Queensland Step Counter.

  • Take part with your kids in school activities like “Walk to School Day”.

  • Get in a half hour brisk walk around the sporting venue or use some of the facilities.

  • Arrange to meet with other parents and get active by walking or jogging.

  • Do warm up or warm down activities with your kids.

  • Take the dog with you and do a walk while the kids are occupied.

  • Find time each weekend to do something active with your kids like cricket in the backyard, frisbee at the beach, or football in the park.

  • Plan an activity challenge together such as a fun run, mini triathlon or a walk for charity.

  • Take your kids and your dog for a walk.

  • Get yourself a bike and explore your local area with the kids.

  • Set up a netball or basketball hoop in the backyard and challenge your kids to a goal shooting competition.

  • Set up a regular time each week for family activity time and be committed to it.
